Professor Kurpis' Management !!

For an ordinary person , its a way of planning, organising, developing and Communicating;
For an extra-ordinary person, its a way of thinking and taking action to make our dreams come true.

Communication Via Blog !!!

Frist of all I want to tell prof. Kurpis thats this is the first time in my life I have blooged. I know what it it, but dont know the real meaning of it. All I was thinking before joining this class and writting my own blog entries that only people who broadcaste can put a new entries and then other people comment on them. But Now, I have known a lot about it. Anyone who has some thoughts in their mind and wants to share it with others can blog and then in this way know more viewpoints of people.
I like blogging in this class because it is easy to interact with other classmates through it. In Baruch specially class size is very big, so its hard to know and talk with every one but with the help of blog, it seems easier. Along with this we can know what other people think about specific issue.
I think it is a very good idea to keep this assignement in next session and all the other session in which Prof. Kurpis will teach. Because when he told us to blog about an activity which we have gone through in class it helps us think about it more. It also helps us determine, what other way we could have done that particular job which we as a group did in class first time.
Blogging gives us liberty to speak and present our viewpoints to others. It helps us interact with others and exchange ideas. I think its a very good idea to keep this section of syllabus for other coming students too. I like the creativity and different stuff which Prof Kurpis brings in Management. He is different than other professor.

MacDonald’s Special order !!


It was Sunday November 30, 2008 around 3:30pm. I went to the MacDonald’s restaurant in my town, Center Moriches to place a special order for my Management class extra-credit assignment. Since the order which I was about to give was special and different, I was little bit afraid of placing it.
First, I went inside. As soon as I step near to the counter, the employee standing there greeted and asked me, “How can I help you?” I replied to her, “I want a hamburger with exactly four pickles in it and a small French fries with no salt on it”. I also told her that I want a receipt which exactly shows, what I have ordered. As soon as I said it, she looked at me for three seconds and smiled at me. I guess she did not know how to print a receipt for this type of order. Then, she started punching numbers in the computer. She did not figure out how to punch four pickles in the computer, therefore she asked for help of another employee who was standing next to her. He told her how to put it on the receipt. I then paid my bill and got the receipt which shows exactly, what I had ordered.
Subsequently, she sends my order in the back (Kitchen) and told me that it will take a while because is not regular order. While I was standing there, I saw two people are making my order in the kitchen. These two people asked the counter employee again, “Four pickles, you want?” Employee in the front replied, “Yes, four exactly, no more than this.”
Meanwhile, she was also making frying French fries for me. While she put French fries in oil to cook; she went in the back to check if people in the back are doing right with hamburger. The moment, she went in the back, someone touched the fries which she was

frying for me and about to put the salt on it. She speak loudly to the other employee, “No, no, no, no salt on it.” Then she put those fries in bag and gives me my order. The whole order took about 10 minutes to prepare. It takes five employees to complete it. Two cashiers, two people in kitchen, and one employee who touched fries. I checked my food; it was precisely what I wanted. And I gave it to my friend who was with me, since I don’t eat hamburger.
I would like to say about management process that it took little bit long since the cashier does not know how to put four pickle in the receipt. The number of people who did this was also too many. If at least one or two employees in Macdonald were little bit more trained, for special order like the one I have ordered, only one person could have done it. On the other hand, when it comes to communication, everyone was so nice there. Not even one of them raised there eyebrows that I am giving this type of order. They all are doing it happily.
If I would have to go to McDonald’s to improve there efficiency, I will tell them to start a new program to train at least one or two people in every MacDonald who can work fast and efficiently with special order. Also, they need to be little bit more organize; so that things get done quickly. At the end, I want to say that I like this extra-credit assignment; it was fun to watch all these employees preparing it.

Dimensions of Behavior


Personality Test revealed pretty good results about me. It told me that that I am Primary "C" Type and Secondary "D" type. And which I am in reality. As far as C type is concern, I am always very concern and detailed oriented person on doing any kind of things. I don't take deciosion and actions very fast. If i do so, i feel like I am doing something wrong and I am not getting the complete knowledge of what I am doing. I like to go in depth of every thing, for example why it is happening and how etc. I like to do things in an organize manner. If there is a hotch-potch in work , I will get confused.
Second, personlaity type shows that I am D type which is very true. for example if I dont have time and I have jump for a conclusion, I will do that in seconds. On the other hand, if i have time I will think about on a particular thing over and over again and then I will take decision. Also, if there is any trouble I am very good to calm the situation down and try to resolve the situation.
I am happy with my results. I don't think I want to become another personlaity Type because of D and C personality type are together, they are the most creative person on earth. So, I am happy with my results.
As far as people understanding in Management is concern, I think its good to give these type of test to better understand a person of how he/she thinks and behave on certain situation. But its not 100% accurate because sometimes people lies on picking up answers of questions while they are given persnality type test or anyother test. So, I am not completly in favor nor against of it. A test can be wrong too.

Power of Vision!!


When I was in high school, I always wanted to be a surgeon, a Neuro-surgeon. I had a lot of interest and passion about studying science. It was until I have to disect a mouse in my tenth standard, I realize that I can't deal with it. It just totally changed my viewpoint of studying science. Later, I took business courses and I find out my interest in accounting which I am studying right now.
I want to be a CPA once I graduate my baruch. Once I have the expericne which I want then I see my self working as a CFO and CEO in big 4 firm. I know its not that easy but I am making every effort to make it possible. For example taking different classes other than Baruch to learn accounting much better, learn more than what we need in order to get a job or internship. Also, I always try to work which is related to my field for example,, book-keeper or working in Account receivable department; so I can learn much more what is written in the books to achieve my goal.
This is just one possibility to taking accounting. I have also a desire to work as a internal auditors because they are the one who know all A to z about a companys account.
If I become what i want to be in life and I have the money then I would like to open Schools for poor girls/boys in developing countries because I myself is coming from a third world counrty. And I know more about their life that how poor people survive and how they send their children in school. I know that a lof poor kids have much more capabilities and they a very intelligent but they dont have resocurces to make their dream come true. i want to give the a path so that they can walk on it.
Lets see what future holds, but I am doing everything to make it possible. I know it will be true one day because I am very positive and passionate about it.

Decision Making


First of all, I want to say a big Thank you to Prof. Kurpis because not every professor put these type of alternatives or choices to their students. Specially about exams! He is very kind and generous about putting this exercise in front of us to improve our grades. In contrast, he was not generous about the grading, his grading policy is hard. But any way Thankyou professor Kurpis.

Taking a decision in this size of group was never easy for us. It was a chaos untill one guy come from back and take the charge of whole class to bring the ideas together. He stand up and starting putting ideas together on blackboard with which most people agreed. Some people in the group were totally wanted to be others to preceive about their ideas. They just wanted to do what they like and trying to force those ideas to bring up their grades. I guess, they just wanted to compete for win. At, the time of chaos, some people who was trying to suggest something from back of class and no-one was listening to them; just left the class. They just withdrawal from the group and left the class like they are not the one who is going to be benefit from it. Or maybe they were just thinking, whatever decision class is going to take they will accept it.
I guess compromise and collaboration went hand-in-hand. We all ran out of time because of their was no clear cut way of making this decision. In last 15-20 minutes, we all just wanted to get this done so everyone were just collaborating with others and trying to explain why this point is more stronger than other.
I personally chose collaborating in the whole exercise because whatever I was saying I had to explain to others why this thing is more improtant than other and why we should so this. well, I don't think it would have been any better in this situation because there were no step-by-step instrucations to follow for us. Also, the class is so big in 50 mins we could not comeup with better ideas. There was no leader in the begining of the class. If we would have leader and instructions to follow , then I would say it might have been better but there is no gurantee because of large group.

An Eggs-cellent Way to Plan !!


The activity which we performed in class as a group, our objective in that was to protect an egg in any which way so that if we drop it from ten feet above, it should not break. Also, the condition was that the egg must not be covered more than fifty percent. we all have limited stuff to protect it for example; an egg, around two feet of masking tape, eight straws and a scissor which must go around in all the groups in order to do whatever they want from this particular material from breaking it.

So, we all as a groups started our first step : we all discussed what we have to do with this limited material. we did make some models and trying to figure out how can we protect it in best way. Finally, we finalize one plan. (It's different story that we make some changes in the end). In Second Step : In second step we analyze our resources and take a look at them after asking prof. Kurpis so we best utilize them in proper way. Then, as far as I am concerned, I don't think we have done the Third Step because in our first step we finalize our model after making different kind of models. Now, comes the best part the Final Step. As soon as we get all the material in our hand. we give our model a fantastic shape. Instead, of cutting the straws, what we did is interconnected them with each other so that we don't loose more tape. And that tape we can use to protect egg and make our model more strong.

I think we did it in the best way. It was fantastic. we finished it before time and our UNBREAKABLE was the best model. It was very nice group to work with.
we drop it from ten feet above and it did not break. We got five bonus points. Yeah!!!!
